TDM850 : Adapting a car air-filter element

There are only two ways to increase the total airflow passing through an air-filter :
1 - increase the surface of the filter.
2 - increase the porosity of the filter.
The second method is used mainly with second market air filters (K&N). It is ok as long as you don't ride in dusty area or don't plan to keep your bike too long.
In summary : greater porosity -> more dust -> engine wears faster.
These filters are well known to the public, they are available at excessive cost, but someone has to pay for all the ads... On the other hand these filters are reusable - which lowers the total cost, unless you sell your bike. You may also buy some "special air-filter oil", at the same cost...

The TDM850 air-filter element may also be replaced by a car air-filter element.
Some cylindrical filters are not very difficult to adapt :

• Get an air-filter element for Renault Megane/Scenic - approximate dimensions as indicated above but check with the original Yamaha's filter. This filter have a metal grid wrapped around.
• Cut the metal grid in the middle to get a small (~1cm) gap.
• Cut the element in two parts using a metal saw.
• Adjust the element to fit the air-box - swearing always helps.
This is a good deal as with one car air-filter you get two TDM air-filter elements !
